I Heart Movies

I recently finished reading the 12 volume Death Note manga series which this live-action adaptaion is based on. The first half of the series I couldn’t put down, as it was focused on a battle of wits between Light, who kills people simply by writing their name in a notebook, and L, whose sole purpose in life is to prove that Light is doing these killings. Both people are ridiculously smart, and almost every page the person who has the upper hand changes. Unfortunately, the same fast pace battle of wits was not what I found in the live-action version. I thought it was really poorly done. It looks pretty low budget, had bad acting, bad cg, and just didn’t “feel” right. I couldn’t watch the whole thing and wound up skipping around looking for interesting parts. The only interesting thing I found was the ending, and that’s only because they changed the story around a bit. There’s a sequel to this movie that takes place right where this one ends. But after trying to watch this one, I don’t care enough to even try to find a copy of it.
